NWSL picks, odds, Paramount+ streaming: Thorns vs. Dash predictions for July 24 from proven soccer expert

The Portland Thorns sit atop the 2021 NWSL standings as they enter a weekend matchup against the Houston Dash, who are just three points behind the Thorns and sitting third in the NWSL table. Saturday’s showdown gets underway from BBVA Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET and can be streamed on Paramount+ with the Premium plan. The Thorns lead the NWSL in goals for (16) and are second in goals allowed (7), while the Dash are fourth in goals for (13) and fourth in goals allowed (11).

Over the last five meetings between these two clubs, Portland is 3-1-1 but Houston has been in better form of late, winning three of its last four games, while Portland has gone 2-1-1. With the Olympics in progress, both teams will be shorthanded and that means depth will be on full display as they piece their lineups together. Portland is the +145 money-line favorite (risk $100 to win $145) in the latest Portland Thorns vs. Houston Dash odds.

NWSL picks for Houston Dash vs. Portland Thorns

Before you tune in to Saturday’s NWSL match, you need to see the NWSL picks from women’s soccer expert Sandra Herrera. She is CBS Sports’ women’s soccer analyst and has been reporting on the game for more than five years. Providing insight both internationally and domestically, she has covered local markets, NWSL drafts and NWSL finals. She knows the women’s game inside and out.

For Portland Thorns vs. Houston Dash, Herrera is backing the Dash (+170) to come up with a pivotal win at home that would pull them even with the Thorns in the standings with 19 points. The Houston attack has been firing on all cylinders of late, as they’ve produced at least two goals in three of their last four games and scored seven times total during that stretch. Meanwhile, Portland has been shut out twice in its last four games.

The Dash have done this despite not having anybody on the squad with more than two goals this season. Katie Naughton has been wearing the captain’s armband with some of her teammates away on international duty and she’s scored twice in her last six games and Herrera is expecting the Dash to use their midfield to control the pace and make the weather in Houston work to their advantage.

“Both teams are coming off of impressive wins in the previous week. Portland’s offensive line have been active, with Morgan Weaver, Sophia Smith, and Simone Charley racking up shot totals, but only picking up narrow score lines for the team in recent wins,” Herrera told SportsLine. “Houston’s Shea Groom has been solid in the midfield while Veronica Latsko and Jasmyne Spencer have been strong on the counter. Look for the home side to play the climate to their advantage in this one.”
