As a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area for the past four years, I’ve become accustomed to the threat of wildfires and preemptive blackouts. Last year, my family and I went without electricity for days at a time — that meant no refrigeration, Wi-Fi or ability to charge our devices. Ahead of this year’s fire season, I purchased a Honda EG2800i ($1119) generator that’s powerful enough to maintain those basics and plenty more. We thankfully only needed it for two nights this year, but it kept our food from going bad and allowed us to stay connected to up-to-date information. — Matt Quinn, Senior Tech Editor
