A former Delaware, Ohio teacher and administrator has received a multiyear prison sentence for having sex with a 14-year-old student.
According to The Columbus Dispatch, former teacher Brooke Wright, 40 and of Gahanna, Ohio, has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts linked to her sex with the teen student.
Wright had pleaded guilty to two felony counts of sexual battery back in September.
As part of a plea agreement, two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor were dismissed.
Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Chris Brown imposed the sentence, which includes a requirement that Wright register as a sex offender every 90 days for life.
In addition to the Ohio teacher’s sentence behind bars for sex with a student, Wright is also ordered to register as a lifetime sex offender and must surrender her teaching license.
Prior to her arrest, Wright worked as a teacher and administrator for Ventures Academy, an alternative school for students needing “social, emotional and behavioral interventions,” according to its website.
She was first indicted in late 2019 after the victim told police of the sexual relationship that lasted several months that year.
According to CBS affiliate WBNS, Wright had been tutoring the teen before having sex with him and had first met him when he was 13 years old.
Wright was alleged to have had sex with a teenage student while working at Ventures Academy in Delaware.
According to The Associated Press, the Ohio teacher may not need to serve a full sentence for her sex with a student.
The judge told Wright during sentencing that she will be eligible for release in 12 months if she commits to good behavior.
Parents previously expressed dismay about Wright’s conduct when she was indicted in November 2019.
“I think it’s sad. I think you put your kids on the school bus every day to be safe and then they’re preyed upon as vulnerable students with adults and that’s horrible,” parent Amy Robertson told ABC affiliate WSYX previously.
“That’s horrible. Someone in a trusted position that could do something like that, that’s horrible and I hope the justice system works well and gets that person out of the system,” said Brian Kiess.
At the time of the Ohio teacher’s arrest for having sex with a student, her employer called her actions a “betrayal.”
“The criminal charges filed against our former employee Brooke Wright disgust everyone in our organization. Her alleged actions represent a betrayal of the trust that students and parents place in us every day,” her employer said in a statement in 2019.
Wright had worked for the school system since 2003.
It was not immediately clear if she had an attorney available for comment.
The judge in Franklin County on Thursday also told Brooke Wright, 40, she could be released after 12 months for good behavior and will have to register as a Tier III sex offender.
