Owl appoints itself co-pilot of chopper fighting California wildfires

An owl paid a mid-flight visit to a helicopter pilot fighting California wildfires, with the astounded aviator calling the scene an “unexplainable,” “magical” and “a miracle.”

“It’s odd to have an owl enter an aircraft,” Dan Alpiner, a helicopter pilot for the Wyoming-based charter company Sky Aviation, posted on Facebook, along with a photo of his odd co-pilot.

Alpiner’s company charters aircraft that help with the West Coast wildfires, and he was making “water drops” over the raging Creek Fire in Fresno County at the time.

“It’s unheard of to have it enter while the helo is in-flight,” the pilot’s Facebook post continues.

‘It’s an unexplainable and magical miracle for it to stay with you for several water drops, then leave just as it arrived – safe and unannounced.”

The owl’s remarkable visit happened Sunday at 12:30 p.m., according to Yourcentralvalley.com.

Alpiner told the outlet that his first response was “Please don’t attack me,” when the big bird flew in through his craft’s 16″ x 16″ window.

“It kinda spooked me for a second there and we kinda locked eyes,” he said.

“And the thing looked around and was chill and then I was like okay, then, you are going to work with me.”

After 10 minutes, the bird just left.

“It basically got out where it came in,” said Alpiner.

“I mean, we get to see a lot of cool things in the work but that is something that I will take with me for a long time.”
