Luigi Mangione, suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s shooting, charged with murder in NYC
Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was hit with a murder charge late Monday, court records show — as his family broke their silence over his arrest.
Manhattan prosecutors filed the first-degree murder rap and a slew of other weapons charges against the 26-year-old, according to an online court docket — just hours after he was arraigned in a Pennsylvania court on weapons and forgery offenses.
Mangione was captured in Altoona, Pa., Monday morning after he was spotted eating at a McDonald’s by a customer of the fast food restaurant who believed he resembled the gunman wanted in last week’s brazen shooting outside a Manhattan hotel.
The suspect — an Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family — was found carrying a ghost gun, fake IDs and rambling writings linking him to the ambush, authorities said.
Mangione, who remains jailed in Pennsylvania, was ordered to be held without bail during a brief Pa. court hearing Monday night after he was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police.
The new charges he’s since been slapped with by Manhattan prosecutors include first-degree murder, three gun raps and forgery, the records show.
Authorities had earlier said they expected murder charges to be filed in New York in the coming days.
The developments came as Mangione’s family broke their silence, issuing a statement saying they were “shocked and devastated” in the wake of his arrest.
“We are devastated by this news,” the family said in a statement posted on X.
“Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione. We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” they continued.
“We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”
Thompson, 50, was killed last Wednesday as he walked alone to a Midtown hotel, where UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, was holding its annual investor conference, cops said.

In the days after the shooting, the NYPD released a handful of surveillance images of the suspect and footage of the brazen attack as a desperate manhunt for him unfolded.
Photos taken in the lobby of a hostel on the Upper West Side showed the suspect grinning after removing his mask, police said.
The tipster who alerted cops to Mangione’s whereabouts on Monday recognized him from one of the images, cops said.
The Manhattan DA’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the charges late Monday.
