Federal prosecutors drop fraud charges against Brian Laundrie

Federal prosecutors in Wyoming have officially dismissed fraud charges against Brian Laundrie, the only suspect in the strangling of Long Island native Gabby Petito.

US District Judge Scott Skavdahl on Wednesday signed the order dropping the fraud charges against Laundrie, 23, “with prejudice” — meaning the charges cannot be refiled in his court.

Laundrie was indicted in September on charges that he illegally used Petito’s bank card to charge more than $1,000 after she went missing during the couple’s cross-country trip.

Petito’s body was found at a remote Wyoming campground on Sept. 19.

An autopsy ruled the 22-year-old’s death a homicide and determined she was strangled.

Laundrie was identified as the sole person of interest in the case but disappeared from his parents’ home in North Port, Florida, where the couple had been living.

The FBI launched a massive manhunt for Laundrie that captivated the nation, with even reality TV star Dog the Bounty Hunter among those joining the search.

Dozens of reported sightings made headlines throughout the country, with Laundrie reportedly spotted as far north as the Carolinas along the Appalachian Trail.

However, his skeletal remains were found at the 25,000-acre Carlton Reserve near the home on Oct. 20, with investigators revealing that he shot himself in the head.

The US Attorney’s Office in Wyoming on Tuesday filed a motion to dismiss the charges there, noting prosecutors “secured Brian Laundrie’s certified death certificate” on Dec. 6 and were moving to have the case dropped.
