10-year-old girl killed by New Year ‘celebratory gunfire’: ‘Who paid? A little girl’

A Florida family’s New Year’s Eve celebration turned to tragedy after a 10-year-old girl was struck and killed by a stray bullet from “celebratory gunfire” just moments after ringing in the new year, authorities said.

Yaneliz Munguia suddenly collapsed at 12:04 a.m. Wednesday after going to light fireworks outside her home in Miami-Dade County — with her horrified parents then seeing a gunshot wound to the back of her head, according to relatives and police.

Her family rushed her to Jackson Memorial Hospital by car, but the girl — who turned 10 just days earlier — was pronounced dead, NBC Miami reported.

The fatal bullet appears to have been from “celebratory fire,” Miami-Dade police said while announcing a $5,000 reward for info on the still-unknown shooter.

Nobody has been arrested for firing the shots, according to authorities. WSVN

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a devastating reminder that what goes up must come down,” the department said.

“Bullets fired into the air can take innocent lives.”

Munguia’s grandfather, Ramon Valdizol told reporters “It hurts my soul.” WSVN

One family member, Carlos Gutierrez, also told CBS that “shooting a gun into the sky has consequences.

“Who paid? A little girl. What did the girl do? Nothing.” What fault did she have? But that’s the way things are,” family member Carlos Gutierrez told CBS.”

Munguia ‘s death left her family, including her 7-year-old brother, heartbroken.

“It hurts my soul,” Yaneliz’s grandfather, Ramon Valdizol, told CBS Miami.

“Every time I came over, she was always happy to see me and now I can’t bear to enter their home and not be able to see her again,” he told the outlet, his voice breaking.

A fundraiser for Munguia’s funeral expenses has by Friday morning raised more than $43,000, closing in on double the family’s goal of $254,000. The fundraiser also urged the shooter to hand themselves in.
