Coastal and northern parts of Britain are in for a few days of ‘persistent’ rain, forecasters have predicted.

The Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings, beginning at midnight in southern Scotland.

From 6am Cumbria in the north west will be covered by a warning which says some communities could become cut off due to flooded roads.

Road closures may be needed if flooding creates hazardous driving conditions and public transport including bus and trains face delays or cancellations.

The Met Office adds: ‘There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.’

Despite the dampness, meterologist Luke Miall said it’s ‘exceptionally’ mild for the time of year because of warm air pushing up the south.

He said a stationary weather front could yield a ‘large’ amount of rain across tomorrow and Thursday.

Rain clouds will trickle southwards tomorrow night into Northern Ireland, north Wales and north-west Midlands.

Luke said: ‘Autumn is very much with us across the UK, turning a lot more unsettled over the next few days.’

On Friday a new rain warning spans all of western Wales from Swansea in the south to Bangor in the north.

The warning, set to remain active until 11.59pm, says homes and businesses could be flooded and power supplies could be interrupted.

Heavy rain has been forecast to continue into the Halloween weekend, casting a doubt on families’ trick or treating plans.
