The number of Covid case has risen by 28.1% in a week as 34,471 more people tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours.
A further six people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.
Yesterday, the UK recorded 31,772 more infections and 26 coronavirus-related deaths.
The data also showed that 45.9 million people have had a first dose of the vaccine and 34.9 million have had two.
Despite the high number of infections, the government has vowed to go ahead with the easing of lockdown restrictions in England from July 19.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “Thanks to the shared sacrifices of the British people and the protective wall of our vaccination programme, we have made huge advances.”
He added: “We’ve all been yearning to get there and we all want this to be a one-way journey, so we’ve acted in a measured way taking one step at a time and looking at the very latest data and at our four tests before deciding whether to proceed.”
