UK cold snap continues with 40mph winds and Arctic blast to bring more snow

Strong winds and wintery showers will round off the week after bitingly cold temperatures blanketed the country with outbreaks of frost and snow.

Today forecasters predict widespread rain across the country as well as sub zero temperatures in many areas.

While the mercury won’t plummet to lows seen in recent days it will reach -1C in some northern regions and will stay low for most of the day.

And there are also warnings of strong winds across Scotland together with unsettled weather, as gusts of more than 40mph are forecast to batter the far north of the country.

Met Office forecaster Clare Nasir said of Thursday’s weather: “It will be a chilly start to the day particularly across eastern counties with a touch of frost in places.

Rain is predicted to be widespread

“Temperatures just recovering further west and a few showers to start the day across more southern areas.

“It’s a wet start for Scotland, outbreaks of rain here and a strong wind associated with the cold front.”

The Met Office said there will be some brighter spells during the day with the south east enjoying milder climates than seen in recent days.
