Two special constables hurt after being hit by ‘stolen car’

Police are appealing for witnesses following a crash with a suspected stolen car last night which left two special constables injured. The collision followed two robberies during which members of the public are alleged to have been threatened with a suspected firearm, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Police are now exploring the possibility a “shooting” was the potential catalyst to the incident last night which saw a black BWM collide with a red Vauxhall Corsa at around 9.45pm on Penistone Road, at the junction with KFC.

After the crash, four or five men left the BMW which police believe was stolen. One of the men, who police said was carrying a suspected firearm, then allegedly robbed a red Ford SMAX from a member of the public and drove it the wrong way down Penistone Road.

The man then left the vehicle and allegedly robbed a silver Tiguan from another member of the public, driving away towards Bradfield Road.

An on duty Special Constable who stumbled across the incident was injured after a collision with the Tiguan. The officer remains in hospital with minor injuries. Another Special Constable was also superficially injured in the incident.

A 26-year-old man from Sheffield has been arrested on suspicion of burglary, robbery and attempted murder. He remains in custody at this time.

Two women who were in the red Corsa were taken to hospital with minor injuries. They were treated and discharged.

Today, South Yorkshire Police issued a statement appealing for witnesses who may have heard a firearm in the area – Southey Green and Adlington Road – between 9.30 and 9.45pm. Police said the incidents may not be connected but they “must explore every avenue to determine what happened”.

South Yorkshire Police said in a tweet: “Detectives are now exploring the possibility that a shooting was the catalyst to last night’s events, which culminated in two of our officers being injured in a collision on Penistone Road, Sheffield at 9.45pm.”

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles, overseeing the investigation, said: “Last night affected a number of people in the city centre and has no doubt caused some real concern in the community.

“I would like to reassure the public that we’re doing all we can to find those responsible and work out the sequence of events that may have led up to the incidents on Penistone Road.

“Members of the public in three different cars were left both injured and shaken and one of our Special Constables, who volunteers to make the streets safer in his own time, is currently in hospital with injuries which are thankfully not too serious.

“We’re urging anyone who may have been travelling on Penistone Road between 9.45pm and 10pm last night to get in touch. In particular, we want to hear from anyone who may have dash cam footage as it may greatly assist with our ongoing investigation which is already gathering pace.”
