Storm Darragh’s first victim named as beloved football coach

Storm Darragh’s first victim has been named as beloved football coach Paul Fiddler who was killed after a tree fell on his van. 

Paul Fiddler, who was in his 40s, suffered serious injuries after a tree fell onto his Citroen van on the A59 in Longton, Lancashire, on Saturday.

His untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of many.

Tributes flooded social media as family, friends, and teammates remembered him as a kind-hearted and supportive presence in their lives.

His niece, Katie Elliott, wrote an emotional tribute:”I love you so much, Uncle Paul. I wish I could have said goodbye. You’ll always be in my heart. Thank you for being the best uncle I could ever ask for.”

Fellow Lytham Town FC players and staff expressed their deep sorrow, calling him a “legend” within the club. A spokesperson for the club said:

“Today, we remember a Lytham Town FC legend, Paul Fiddler. Our thoughts are with the lads, his friends, and family. Rest in Peace, Paul. We will miss you.”

Friends described Fiddler as an “all-round nice guy” who always had a smile on his face.

Barry Wade recalled his infectious positivity, while Janine Farnell noted his helpful and friendly nature.

Others reflected on his impact beyond the football pitch, with one said: “Paul was a massive support for countless families in their moments of need, and his kindness will always be remembered.”

Lancashire Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Det. Sgt. Matt Davidson of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit shared his condolences.

He said: “Our thoughts are with his loved ones. We are working to determine exactly what happened and urge anyone with dashcam or mobile footage to come forward.”

The storm, which recorded winds of up to 93 mph, wreaked havoc across the UK.
