Prince Charles’s heartbreaking ‘distant parents’ confession echoes Harry’s words

Prince Charles opened up about his “emotionally distant” parents years before his son would go on to made similar claims, it has been revealed.

In an explosive interview last week, Prince Harry criticised the way he was brought up, saying it had felt like “a mixture between The Truman Show and being in a zoo”.

He spoke of a “genetic pain” passed down through the family, and discussed coming to terms with Prince Charles’s challenging parenting style. He said he wanted to “break the cycle” of “suffering” when it comes to his own children.

Now, royal journalist Omid Scobie has highlighted how Prince Charles spoke of a similar problem in his authorised biography, as The Express reports.

Prince Harry has criticised the way he was raised by his father, saying he wants to ‘break the cycle’ of ‘genetic pain’ when it comes to his own children

Omid shared an extract from Charles’ authorised book, published in 1994, suggesting it shed light on Charles’s own “unresolved childhood issues”.

He tweeted: “In 1994, Prince Charles authorised a biography on himself by journalist Jonathan Dimbleby. One chapter in it—approved by the prince—talks in great detail about his unresolved childhood issues with “emotionally distant” parents.”

Jonathan Dimbleby, the author of the biography, accuses Charles’ mother the Queen of being emotionally distant. And Prince Philip gets a damning appraisal as a “harsh” and “hectoring” father who was annoyed by his son’s over-sensitiveness.

Dimbleby was writing Prince Charles’s approval.

At the time, the Independent newspaper said the biography represented “Prince Charles’s revenge.”

Last week, Prince Harry spoke specifically about Prince Charles on the Armchair Expert Podcast with host and actor Dax Shepard.

He said: “Suddenly I started to piece it together and go, ‘OK, so this is where he went to school, this is what happened, I know this about his life, I also know that is connected to his parents so that means he’s treated me the way he was treated, so how can I change that for my own kids?’

“And well here I am, I moved my whole family to the US, that wasn’t the plan but sometimes you’ve got to make decisions and put your family first and put your mental health first.”

He added: “When it comes to parenting, if I’ve experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered, I’m going to make sure I break that cycle so that I don’t pass it on.”
