Pretty but underrated Lake District seaside town with hardly any tourists

The Lake District is home to a charming coastal town in Cumbria featuring a Victorian promenade, hidden gardens and stunning walks.

Grange-over-Sands is found on the edge of the Lake District in Cumbria you will find this picturesque coastal town boasting of stunning views over Morecombe Bay with a mild climate to boot.

Despite its ideal location, it sits away from the bustling tourist crowds of the nearby hot spot, offering a more relaxed atmosphere while also providing all the beauty.

Known as the “Torquay of the North” during the Edwardian period, the description is a testament not only to its popularity.but also to the region’s warm micro-climate that allows semi-tropical plants to grow easily.

This popular seaside resort found a few miles south of the Lake District National Park holds plenty of wonder with endless autumn walks to soak up its lush settings making the most of the crisp season.

The town of Grange-over-Sands was developed in the Victorian era changing it from a small fishing village into a grand and elegant town thanks to the arrival of the railway in 1857.

Within a few years of the railway arrival, the village transformed from an isolated fishing community to a seaside resort with a number of hotels being built offering the ultimate health spa experience thanks to the region’s ideal seaside climate.

Nestled perfectly on the coastline of the Cartmel Peninsula, a mere seven miles south of Lake Windermere, there are a number of spots to soak up the grand sea views of this pretty coastal town.

Grange’s Victorian promenade takes you right along the seafront with views across the shores of Morecambe Bay.

The promenade is the region’s key attraction in the town and has been a tourist destination since its construction.

Visitors are strongly advised to rather enjoy the sea views from the safety of the promenade rather than walking on the saltmarsh due to the presence of dangerous quicksand.

Keeping away from dangerous sand, found next to the promenade the Ornamental gardens offer a lovely spot for an autumn stroll taking in the various plant and wildlife known affectionately by the locals as “’Duck Pond”.

A few miles west from Grange-over-Sands is the village of Cartmel which is home to Cartmel Racecourse.

The popular racecourse has been in use since 1856 hosting a number of year-round events set against the backdrop of the English Lake District.

Holker Hall is a must-see visitor attraction featuring a  25-acre garden which are part-formal and part-woodland.

Grange-over-Sands is located on the Furness Line with services to Barrow-in-Furness, Lancaster, Manchester Airport and Preston.

The nearest airport to Grange-over-Sands is Manchester with Northern Rail operating a train every two hours to Grange-over-Sands.
