Passengers rescued from bus by volunteers in rubber dinghy during flash floods

Passengers on a stricken bus caught in flash floods had to be rescued with an inflatable dinghy by locals as storms wreaked havoc in London.

Flash floods across London saw more than double July’s average monthly rainfall fall in the space of a few hours.

In a video, heroic volunteers can be seen inflating the dinghy and carrying the stranded passengers from the submerged bus which was in trouble in the deep waters.

Wearing bin bags attached to their legs they can be seen navigating the treacherous current of the waters as they make their way to the red bus.

Some passengers were carried to safety

As they worked to free the passengers, cheers can be heard from pedestrians who had gathered to watch the rescue unfold.

The heart-warming scene comes amid chaotic scenes in many parts of the capital after flash floods wrought havoc upon the city.

Elsewhere, video also surfaced online from Pudding Mill Lane DLR station in Stratford – one of several to be shut due to flooding – showing torrents of water gushing in.

And hospitals are reported to have declared a critical incident after some sites were flooded in the downpour.

At Newham and Whipps Cross hospitals major incidents were declared after parts of the sites became flooded.

Patients were told to avoid the emergency departments at Newham and Whipps Cross hospitals where possible and ambulances were being redirected, while extra staff were drafted in.

The Met Office had announced that an amber weather warning for thunderstorms was in place for London until midnight on Sunday.

It meant that more flooding was ‘likely’.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely to cause surface water flooding.

“Flooding of homes and businesses is likely and could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater and isolated lightning strikes.

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely.

“Spray and sudden flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.”
