Nurse fighting for her life after being stabbed in hospital A&E

A nurse is fighting for her life after being stabbed at hospital in Greater Manchester hospital.

A man is being held on suspicion of attempted murder following the shocking incident at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

The incident took place at around 11.30pm last night (Saturday).

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: “It’s believed that a member of the public attacked a member of staff.”

The victim, a woman in her 50s, remains in hospital for treatment for her ‘serious’ injuries, which are believed to be ‘life-changing’ the force said.

Manchester Evening is reporting that it happened in the A+E department of the hospital and that the victim, a nurse, was attacked with a ‘sharp instrument’, that wasn’t a knife.

A 37 year-old man was “swiftly arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder” GMP said.

He remains in custody for questioning.

Whilst this investigation is in the early stages, the force are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

A police car remains stationed outside the A&E department but there does not appear to be a crime scene in place currently.

GMP assured locals that they “do not believe there to be a threat to the wider public” adding that their thoughts are with the nurse’s family and colleagues.

Detective Sergeant Craig Roters from our Oldham district acknowledged that “news of this nature will come as a shock”.

He said: “This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition.

“Our thoughts are with her family and colleagues, and we will continue to support them throughout this investigation.

“The local community can expect to see an increase in police presence whilst we carry out enquiries, but they are also there to offer reassurance and answer any questions you may have. We know that news of this nature will come as a shock, and if you have any concerns or anything you would like to share, please speak to them.”

The MP for Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton has called the stabbing of a Royal Oldham Hospital worker a “senseless attack” and wished her a full recovery.

Jim McMahon, who is also local government minister, posted on Facebook saying: “We are all shocked at the senseless attack on a nurse in the A&E department of the Royal Oldham Hospital.

“Our thoughts are with the nurse, family and friends as we wish a full recovery.”
