A mysterious device has been found on a London Underground carriage, leaving commuters confused as to what it actually is.

The contraption, which appears to be some sort of engine, was discovered on a Central Line train carriage.

It has sparked questions on social media yesterday, with people wondering what it is, and why it was left there.

The original poster on Reddit wrote: ‘I told one of the staff but she said she couldn’t do anything since she’s a cleaner.

‘I’m still very confused as to what this is and how someone forgot it.’

One Reddit user is confident they know the answer, saying it ‘100% a module from a train static converter’, which convert power frequencies.

They wrote: ‘It’s identical to the Central Line 92TS modules.

‘It’s what takes the 630 volts from the rails and converts it to the low voltage 52V DC (several hundred amps) and 230V AC (less amps) that the train uses.

‘The converter this comes from is the size of a chest freezer and weighs a couple of hundred kilos.

‘They are extremely expensive and a train maintainer somewhere is going to be kicking themselves for leaving it there!’

The poster said they were relieved ‘it was not a bomb’ as these models are only ever used to help power Central Line trains.

Metro has contacted Transport for London for comment.
