Man stabbed by London eye hospital as police close major road

A major London road has been closed off following reports of a ‘massive stabbing’ outside Moorfields eye hospital.

Patients were told to stay away from A&E as emergency services rushed to Old Street Roundabout at 17:40pm.

Police confirmed that a man has been taken to hospital with stab injuries and said his wounds don’t appear to be life threatening.

The incident brought traffic to a standstill with pictures showing a huge police presence and cordons across the street.

The area is said to be gridlocked with cars backed up all the way to King’s Cross.

A video from above shows tens of cars grounded to a halt in the surrounding area.

One witness wrote on Twitter: ‘Massive stabbing outside Moorfields eye hospital.

‘Old bill have closed all the roads. Traffic is now seriously f**ked up.’

In a statement Moorfields Hospital said: ‘Please do not visit our A&E at City Road.

‘The area is currently blocked off by the police due to an incident in the area.

‘If you have an eye emergency, sudden sight loss or injury, please log on to speak to one of our doctors online first.’

Met Police later confirmed the incident was a stabbing.

A spoksperson said: ‘A man has been taken to hospital with stab injuries.

‘His condition is not thought to be life threatening.

‘Enquiries are ongoing.’

The incident comes a day after a man, 21, was stabbed to death outside London’s Brent Cross Shopping Centre.

Officers were called to the centre on Tuesday evening following reports of a group of men fighting.

They found the victim with stab wounds and despite the best efforts of paramedics, he died at the scene.

A man, 18, has been arrested on suspicion of murder, while a second suspect, also 18, was arrested on suspicion of affray.

The shopping centre was evacuated due to the incident, and several police vehicles, ambulances and an air ambulance could be seen outside.
