Video footage shows a man aiming a crossbow at police as fleeing partygoers are heard screaming in the background.

A man can be seen carrying the weapon through Barnsley town centre, south Yorkshire, at around 1.30am on Sunday.

Another man filming the incident shouts ‘what are you doing’ at the man who appears to repeatedly point the weapon at passersby and officers.

At one point, he drops the weapon and begins to walk away as two unarmed officers attempt to approach him – before he turns around to pick it up again.

The two officers quickly edge back as revellers are heard screaming in the street nearby.

The suspect had been seen on CCTV threatening members of the public with the weapon on Peel Street.

Officers who were on routine patrol shielded the public before armed back-up arrived.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, confirmed police.

Supt Paul McCurry said: ‘Prior to their arrival, unarmed officers on routine public order duty approached the man using their shields to protect members of the public.

‘Their actions resulted in the man dropping the weapon, which was safely recovered.

‘The man then ran from officers, climbing onto the bridge on West Way. Due to the skills of officers at the scene, he was swiftly detained and brought to safety.’

Praising his officers for their bravery, Supt McCurry said: ‘This was a serious incident which was distressing for those who saw it unfold.

‘Our officers showed their absolute commitment to public safety this morning, they responded very quickly with limited protection to safely resolve the incident.’

Anyone with information or footage of the incident is urged to contact 101.
