An undergraduate has been spared jail after he was caught secretly filming more than 20 students.

Doyun ‘Eric’ Kim, 21, took up-skirt videos across the Manchester University campus as his victims climbed flights of stairs before lectures or at freshers’ events.

He was caught out when a woman taking a shower spotted his iPhone X poking out behind a toilet roll and some small binbags he had used to try and hide it.

In November 2019 she noticed that the phone was recording and saw a thumbnail of engineering student Kim on the screen. She stopped the recording, deleted the footage and rang the police.

The mobile was scanned by forensics experts who discovered 24 different up-skirting videos, but only four of his victims have been identified.

Speaking about her ordeal, one of the victims said: ‘Eric seemed like such a chilled guy – I just can’t believe he would invade my privacy like that. I now have to check for hidden cameras whenever I’m getting ready to do out.’

Another added: ‘I’m just in disbelief and feel angry and upset. I’ve not felt the same way since and I’ve had problems with my relationship because of it.’ The two other students said they were left feeling ‘violated.’

Despite probation services saying he posed a high risk of committing similar crimes in the future, Kim was spared jail.

He was ordered to carry out 220 hours of community service and will have to sign the sex offenders’ register for five years.

Judge Anthony O’Donohoe told him: ‘It seems you are quite an isolated individual but this is not a victimless crime. In fact the victims impacted speak of distress and anger because of your behaviour.

‘This case clearly passes the custody threshold but it is believed you can be managed within the community, given your young age and you have already taken steps to help your behaviour.’
