Inside Britain’s ‘strictest’ pub where kids, phones and swearing are banned
London is home to thousands of pubs perfect for a post-work pint or Sunday roast, but one takes the top spot as quite possibly the strictest in the whole country.
The Nags Head, a charming pub in Belgravia, has a strict policy against mobile phones. Not only are they frowned upon, but they’re also completely banned, to the extent that you can’t even use one to pay for your drink.
Nestled in a quaint and quiet mews in Knightsbridge, the Nags Head is a cosy little pub steeped in history and quirky charm. Its walls are decorated with old photos, vintage memorabilia and antique penny-slot machines.
The unique pub, which dates back to the 1800s, is currently managed by former guardsman and actor, Kevin Moran, whose name is proudly displayed out front.
This historic establishment, built in the 19th century, was once popular among stable hands and footmen before experiencing a resurgence in the 1950s.
At 84, Kevin Moran could well be Britain’s most stringent pub landlord, having ruled over The Nags Head for the past four decades. On top of the anti-phones policy, he enforces some other strict rules, according to The Sun.
Occupying a table too large for your group is not allowed, and neither is hanging your coat on the back of your chair instead of using the provided coat hooks.
Payment must be made with cash or a physical card – for which there’s a £15 minimum. Moran is also adamant about maintaining a child-free environment.
Lastly, foul language and drunkenness are not tolerated, making a change from most of the pubs up and down the country.
Despite this list of rules, The Nags Head remains a popular boozer as people enjoy taking a step back in time and ditching their phones for quality conversation.
One person wrote on Tripadviser: “Ha ha how can you rate this pub? I doubt the owner cares. His pub his rules. Like it or lump it. He is still in business after donkeys years so who is right?
“Beer is good. I wonder if no mobile rule now strictly applied when you pay using phone. It’s good people talk to each other.”
Another commented: “We spent an absolutely wonderful day at The Nags Head yesterday. So much fun, great staff and owner, superb music. Will be going back soon. If you want a genuine experience then this is the place to go.”
A third chimed in: “Kevin the Landlord is a complete star, what a great guy. Proper old school pub. Yes, mobile phones are banned. Didn’t bother me as I had some great conversations with Kevin and other regulars.
“I visted the pub in all four days I was in London and loved it. Noreen the bar lady and Kevin the postman are great people. After four days I felt like a regular, what a pub. Cant wait untill my next visit.”
