Girl fights for life after being thrown from car bonnet in supermarket car park

A 16-year-old who suffered serious head injuries when she was thrown from the bonnet of a car is fighting for her life, police said.

The girl injured by a Fiat 500 in a Morrisons car park in Seaburn, Sunderland, at around 7:30pm on Tuesday.

Officers were alerted by staff at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, who said the teenager had been admitted with serious head injuries.

Two young women aged 16 and 18 have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and have since been released.

Northumbria Police said all parties were known to each other.

The injured girl remained in a critical condition in hospital and her family was being supported by specially-trained family liaison officers.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, leading the inquiry, appealed for witnesses.

He said: “This is clearly an awful incident and has left a 16-year-old girl with serious head injuries. We will continue to offer support to her family.

“We are committed to finding out the circumstances behind this and the events that immediately preceded the girl sustaining these injuries.

“This happened in a busy supermarket car park so we believe people will have been nearby and potentially witnessed what happened.

“I’m asking those people to do the right thing and pick up the phone today – please pass on any information you have.”
