Germany has extended its travel ban on passengers from the UK and South Africa until January 6, over fears of a new strain of Covid.

The nation closed its borders to the UK on Sunday, following Boris Johnson’s confirmation of a new mutation of the virus which is up to 70% more infectious.

France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Israel, Chile, Canada, India, Pakistan, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, Jordan and Hong Kong also temporarily barred anyone arriving from the UK following the press conference on Saturday evening.

The new variant has not been detected in Germany. An order from the ministry of transport said planes from the UK would not be allowed to land after midnight on Sunday, although cargo could still arrive.

A document, seen by Reuters, has now revealed the ban will stay in place until January 1. Rail and bus operators, shipping companies and airlines are forbidden to transport people from the UK, Northern Ireland and South Africa to Germany.

German citizens and people living in the country may return home from January 1, but any flights will have to be approved by authorities, the document said.
