Four in 10 areas in England see Covid rise as two worst hotspots double in week

Four in every ten towns and cities in England have recorded a week-on-week rise in Covid cases – while the country’s two worst hotspots saw infections double in a week.

Latest data from Public Health England reveals that 140 areas saw an increase in people testing positive in the seven days to Monday.

Selby in North Yorkshire has the highest infection rate, rising from 53 cases per 100,000 to 114.8.

Hyndburn, in Lancashire, has the second highest rate, up from 28.4 to 82.7.

North Lincolnshire, Chiltern and Herefordshire also recorded sharp rises, the figures show.

But there was encouraging news, with 160 of the country’s 315 local authority areas seeing cases fall, and 15 remaining unchanged.

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

  • Selby (up from 53.0 to 114.8)
  • Hyndburn (28.4 to 82.7)
  • North Lincolnshire (52.8 to 81.8)
  • Chiltern (11.5 to 28.1)
  • Herefordshire (16.1 to 32.2)

Earlier today the government’s Sage Committee and the Department for Health said the crucial R number, which measures whether the virus is spreading or retreating, has risen very slightly to 0.8-1.1.

This means every 10 infected people passes coronavirus to a further eight to 11 people.

London, the East of England, the Midlands, the South East and the North East and Yorkshire could now all have have an R-rate above 1 – meaning infections are on the rise, the latest data shows.

The Department of Health this evening confirmed 15 more people had died within 28 days of contracting the virus, bring the UK’s official death toll to 127,517.

There were 2,381 new cases identified, but the number of people testing positive has fallen 10 per cent in the past week compared to the previous seven days.

Prof Tim Spector, an epidemiologist at King’s College London, said the country was moving into an “endemic” period and urged people to become “more relaxed and less stressed out”.

He told Sky: “We are better than we were and we have one of the lowest rates in Europe and its’s till dropping.

“It’s showing the damage risk of have symptomatic COVID is really low at the moment- we estimate as low as one in 40,000.

“I think it looks like at the moment we are past that pandemic period and moving into endemic where we get low levels of infection and occasion outbreaks that don’t spread to the rest of the population.”
