Elderly couple won £60k but tragically died before they could enjoy the prize

An elderly couple were overjoyed when they won big in the Postcode Lottery, but died in tragic circumstances before they got a chance to enjoy the money.

Jean Davies from Billinge in Merseyside, was presented with bumper £60,000 prize in Decemeber 2018, after winning the Christmas draw.

In an amazing stroke of luck, Jean had registered twice by mistake, and would otherwise of won £30k, MailOnline reports.

Jean and her husband Brian, who were both 82 at the time, were delighted.

Their daughter Gillian said Jean planned use the money “to get more adaptions in the bungalow such as wooden flooring, a new kitchen and a new bathroom suite”.

“She was excited about sprucing up the house,” she added.

But shortly after the plans were abandoned after a series of heartbreaking developments. Brian suffered a fall, with several more in the months that followed. His cognitive function also started declining.

Around that time their son Brian Jr. was diagnosed with throat cancer aged 52, and the family’s focus turned to supporting the pair.

Gillian, then 58, and later her older half-sister Susan, then 65, supported the couple, but the family suffered another shock when Jean was hospitalised with pneumonia in June 2020.

Susan when with Jean while Gillian remained with dad Brian.

Jean returned home from the hospital five days later but was still unwell, experiencing delirium and dehydration.

Brian was moved to a care home and when lockdown hit, Jean faced strict restrictions on seeing him, compounding the heartache.

Jean, who was “broken” by not being able to remain by Brian’s side, died on 5th June 2022, Gillian said.

Brian Snr. died only a few months later on November 1st, before the pair could enjoy the windfall.
