Afghan ‘heroes’ who worked for British Army to be rehomed in UK city

The Home Office has moved to help the employees, including translators, interpreters and clerks, who were often exposed to dangerous situations in the conflict. They have been hailed heroes after helping save British lives since 2013.

They’ll now live in a number of cities, including Plymouth and Devon, which have strong links to with the Armed Forces.

Councillor Vivien Pengelly, cabinet member for homes and communities at Plymouth City Council, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that Plymouth is set become part of this scheme.

“These people are heroes.”

The families will be supported to assist in adjusting to their new life in the UK, Plymouth Live reports. They’ll be helped with schooling and finding employment and, after five years, they can apply for permanent residence in the UK.

Participation in the scheme follows on from a similar project run between 2014 and 2016, which saw 16 households welcomed to Plymouth.

Cllr Pengelly added: “The courage they have shown in helping our troops among complex communities in Afghanistan is rightly being rewarded and I look forward to welcoming them here to Plymouth to join our warm armed forces family.”

The move has largely been welcomed online.

One Facebook user wrote: “These men put their lives on the line to help the British and should be given a safe haven.”

Another wrote: “Absolutely 100% agree with this, they should be welcomed with open arms. They’ve helped to save countless forces lives.”

A third shared: “This is fantastic!”

But some online voiced opinions that British heroes, and homeless British people, should be prioritised.

One social media user wrote: “This is another strain on the welfare system and public pot.”

Another said: “I don’t see Plymouth City Council actually building council houses for the people already here.”

A third shared: “But what about our veterans?”
