Here’s the scientifically proven cure hangovers this Christmas
Celebrations. Parties. Booze-heavy meals. Christmas is often a time of over-indulgence… But you don’t need to worry, as the ideal, lifesaving, and science based hangover cure is only five ingredients away.
It’s that time of the year again, and nobody likes a hangover at Christmas.
Everyone has their solution. Black coffee and toast for some, hair of the dog for others.
Pack away those options, as the ideal cure may have been found.
A British doctor has shared her “science driven” hangover sandwich that promises to rid you of all morning after shakes.
Indeed, GP Dr Zoe Williams, in partnership with UK bakery Warburtons, has come up with the ultimate recipe that contains the necessary nutrients to replenish your system with all the essentials you lost after a heavy night of drinking.
Dr Williams explains in a video posted to her Instagram that alcohol dehydrates the body and lowers your blood sugar and that eating something when you’re hungover can help the body recover.
“The Christmas party season is in full swing and my advice is drink sensibly but if you do overindulge, here is my hangover sandwich,” she said.
So, what’s in this magical sarnie?
Take some notes. You’ll only need five ingredients:
- Bread – duh. Williams recommends half white and half wholemeal for all the fibre goodness.
- Bacon – which “contains salts to replenish and proteins that help get rid of that hangover brain fog”. (Salty vegetarian alternatives are also available.) Salt is essential, as one of the main electrolytes shed during drinking is sodium, and since alcohol is a diuretic, you’re going to want to stock up on lost alkali.
- Avocado – for vitamins, minerals and healthy fats that will boost your energy levels.
- Eggs – a must, no matter how you cook them, as they’re “a great source of B12 which is likely to be depleted when you’re hungover,” as well as the providers of amino acid cysteine to combat acetaldehyde (“a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism”). Eggs are also a veritable powerhouse when it comes to nutrients, protein and vitamins.
- Sauce of your choice. Because… taste.
Dr Williams also suggests serving the sandwich up with a “big glass of water and a cup of tea for hydration and antioxidants.”
Doesn’t sound like the worst morning, right?
Just remember to drink responsibly, have plenty of water around, and no matter what some tipsy relative tells you, hair of the dog doesn’t really help. It only prolongs the agony.
