Taylor Swift fans strike again! (Seriously, is there a fandom with a better sense of humor?)
On Monday, September 28, Jake Gyllenhaal—who dated the Folklore singer briefly in 2010—posted a throwback photo that lines up with the lyrics to Swift’s song “All Too Well” just a little too well. For those who can’t remember celeb gossip from 2012, the song from Swift’s Red album is rumored to be about their relationship. Here are the lyrics in question:
“Photo album on the counter, your cheeks were turning red
You used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin-sized bed
And your mother’s telling stories about you on a tee-ball team
You taught me ’bout your past, thinking your future was me.”
And here is Gyllenhaal’s Instagram post:
It didn’t take long for Swifties to start flooding the comments section with those lyrics, though some also added other lines from the song. “So casually cruel in the name of being honest” was a popular one, while one user asked, “Were you on a tee-ball team too?”
There are currently more than 8,000 comments on the photo. “U posted this pic and thought that the Swifties would do nothing???? Mistake,” another user commented. Was it a mistake? Or was it a well-crafted plan to get more attention for The Inspire Project? Just asking.
The thing is, Gyllenhaal has to be aware of his rumored connection to the song. The theory is so widespread that even his sister, actor Maggie Gyllenhaal, has been forced to address it, thanks to the lyric “I left my scarf there at your sister’s house. And you’ve still got it in your drawer even now.”
Back in 2017, Andy Cohen gave the Swifties what they wanted and asked Maggie about the scarf on Watch What Happens Live. “I never understood why everybody asked me about this scarf. What is this?” she said. “I am in the dark about this scarf. It’s totally possible [it’s at my house]. I don’t know. I have been asked this before, and I am like, ‘What are you talking about?’”
The reaction to Gyllenhaal’s Instagram is proof that it doesn’t matter what Taylor Swift era we’re in—Swifties will never let him live this song down.
