Today’s Connections Hints & Answers For January 10, 2025 (Puzzle #579)
If your streak is dependent on you winning today’s Connections puzzle, you might want to use some hints to make sure you win. Today has some word choices that were different from what I was expecting, and these puzzles are good at tricking you anyway. There were some categories that would be hard to spot without context as well, which is always interesting. Once you have more context, however, it should be easier to solve the puzzle and salvage your streak before its too late.
If you want to play a different kind of word game, you will want to try out the NYT’s The Strands puzzle. It is a different kind of word search, where you don’t actually know what words you are searching for. You do get a hint, but it can sometimes mean more than one thing which can make it hard to get the right words. The good news is you don’t need to know, as the more words you guess that aren’t part of the puzzle, the more hints you receive as well.

JANUARY 10 #579
If you need help figuring out what to do today, that is understandable. I myself got a “phew” as there were several guesses that were very close but not close enough. There are a lot of words that could mean near the same thing, which is not helpful when you are attempting to search them out. Some words are also used in ways that I did not expect when I was first settling things, making it difficult to do other things.
- One category is about words that denote things that are important
- One category is about words that are used to someone else who is overly emotional
- One category is about things that are all used in the same recipe
- One category is about four things that are part of a complex problem that was made famous by a game show

BE CONTINGENT (ON) | |||
---|---|---|---|
DEPEND |
HINGE |
RELY |
REST |
This category and the next one had a lot of the words that I kept switching out for each other. I wasn’t reading this as a passive verb, and in the active sense, REST doesn’t make as much sense as the others. However, it was the only other word that sort of fit in as I kept scanning the puzzle looking for what might go there. However, it was confusing as REST seemed to belong in the next category without a doubt when I first started solving the puzzle, but obviously, that was incorrect.

“CALM DOWN” | |||
---|---|---|---|
CHILL |
EASY |
ENOUGH |
RELAX |
I did not read this category as being things that are said when I first saw it. CHILL, RELAX, and EASY are all just words that describe taking a break. This meant I wasn’t sure what else could go here. Once I had solved the first category, I was left unsure, and I moved on before coming back to this one. At that point, between the words in the last category and ENOUGH, only one of them made sense. At least, I was fairly certain the last word wasn’t GOAT.

INGREDIENTS IN AN OLD FASHIONED | |||
---|---|---|---|
BITTERS |
ORANGE |
RYE |
SUGAR |
This one I was leaning toward anyway, and the main trick word here is likely RYE. Most people wouldn’t just think about what makes the alcohol in their drinks, but RYE is what makes up the liquid. It may not look like it, and it may not make sense when you are first solving the puzzle, but it is true. SUGAR is also not what most people would think of in an Old Fashioned at first, but alcohol has sugar in it alone and so does ORANGE juice.

FEATURED IN THE MONTY HALL PROBLEM | |||
---|---|---|---|
CAR |
DOOR |
GOAT |
HOST |
Lastly, there is the math problem that rests on what’s behind a few doors and how people can increase their odds statistically. It’s always a weird problem to think about, and having to think about the individual components in a completely different puzzle wasn’t helpful. However, it is one of those categories that makes a lot more sense once you get the context. It’s a little unfortunate, mainly because I write so I don’t have to think about math generally speaking, and I’m mad that someone forced me to think about it.
