Like many grandparents, Prince Charles wants a bright and hopeful future for his grandchildren, including the recently arrived Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. He called the birth of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s daughter “such happy news” during a speech on June 8, and added the reason she and all his grandchildren inspire him to be more environmentally conscious.
While visiting a Mini car factory in Cowley, Oxfordshire, the future monarch related the company’s efforts toward sustainability to his own family, saying (per Page Six), “The development of technology like electric vehicles, or green hydrogen for that matter for heavy transport, is vital for maintaining the health of our world for future generations, something I am only too aware of today, having recently become a grandfather for the fifth time,” referring to little Lili.
His other grandchildren are Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis (the children of Prince William and Kate Middleton) and Archie, son of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
He continued, “Such happy news really does remind one of the necessity of continued innovation in this area–especially around sustainable battery technology–in view of the legacy we bequeath to our grandchildren.”
It’s likely Lilibet will be Prince Charles’s last grandkid. Last January, Kate Middleton revealed, “I don’t think William wants any more,” and all the way back in July, 2019, Prince Harry said his family would include “two [kids], maximum!”
Just like his dad, Prince Harry connected his family’s legacy to the future of the planet. He said in that same conversation, “I’ve always thought, This place is borrowed. And, surely, being as intelligent as we all are, or as evolved as we all are supposed to be, we should be able to leave something better behind for the next generation.”
“Lili was born on Friday, June 4, at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA. She weighed 7 lb. 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home,” Markle and Prince Harry said in a statement. “Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, the Princess of Wales.”
