Oscar Viewers Are Stunned By Chadwick Boseman’s Shocking Best Actor Loss

Well. Hm…..

The Oscars are officially over, but an abrupt ending has many viewers both outraged and confused. After an insanely successful awards season run, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom‘s Chadwick Boseman (who many believed to be the night’s only true lock for an Academy Award) lost to The Father‘s Anthony Hopkins (who, for the record, was phenomenal). Not only was Boseman’s performance a tour de force, it was his final film before his passing from colon cancer in August 2020.

The Best Actor trophy, which seemed to be the night’s one safe bet, went to Hopkins instead for playing a man suffering through the throes of dementia. Somewhat ironically, Hopkins was not in attendance to accept the award and the night ended abruptly after his name was announced.

Making matters more awkward, Academy Awards producers switched up the traditional order in which the Oscars are handed out. Best Director, an award normally saved for later in the show, went to Chloé Zhao early in the evening. Best Picture, the award typically given last, went to Nomadland with two awards remaining. And Best Actress, arguably the most contested award of the evening, was saved for the penultimate award. Most viewers expected this change in order was because producers wanted to save Boseman’s win for the big finale of the show. Instead: Joaquin Phoenix awkwardly read Hopkins’ name and the show ended.

Social media was equally stunned.

There’s no hard confirmation that Steven Soderbergh, who produced this year’s awards, had a say in how the awards were handed out or if he specifically had Best Actor last under the pretense that Boseman would win, but hey, if he did? That’s proof that you shouldn’t try to mess with tradition. While the ending certainly was abrupt, the Academy did get it right with most of the awards this year, with a number of firsts for winners like Zhao, Youn Yuh-jung, and others.

Plus: Glenn Close did “Da Butt.” And Daniel Kaluuya thanked his parents for having sex.
