There are many ways to describe Olivia Wilde—actor, Marvel director, Harry Styles stan, mother, sustainable shopper—but it’s that last one that has her fired up lately. A longtime environmental advocate, Wilde has always been passionate about using her platform for good…but there’s nothing like the urgency that comes from watching your own government put climate change efforts on the back burner.
That’s why Wilde teamed up with Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program to help make it easier to shop for more sustainable items. “There’s so many small changes we can do,” she tells Glamour. “Amazon, which is incredibly influential and such an integral part of people’s lives, can really move the needle. It’s about changing big businesses.”
So how does it work? When you shop on Amazon, you’ll see a Climate Pledge Friendly label that will signify the product has one or more of 19 different sustainability certifications, including more efficient design and packaging.
“People take packaging for granted, whether it’s lots of Styrofoam or a big box,” Wilde explains. “That seems like a small thing, but on a massive scale it really adds up and can make a difference.”
It’s a lesson she’s teaching her two young children, Otis and Daisy, as well. “My philosophy is explaining that things are not as disposable as it may seem to a small child who thinks, Oh, I’ll just toss it in the garbage and there will be another one. What I try to do is explain that we’re going to use the soap until it’s done, or if we’re wrapping a present, we’re going to use something we have in the house. We reuse as much as possible.”
Speaking of, Wilde wanted to share the products she loves most from the companies doing their part to help the planet. Many come from brands you’ll recognize. “We need to start applying pressure to massive companies like Amazon,” she says. “I’m really excited to see what other companies take notice and start incorporating similar programs.”
Here, Olivia Wilde opens up her medicine cabinet, pantry, closet, and more to share her favorite sustainable items for Glamour‘s latest edition of Your Fave’s Faves.
The sneakers I always wear
I am a real Vans girl. I’ve been wearing the very basic checkered Vans forever. I think because you can slip them on and off to go into people’s spaces and homes. I’ve been doing a lot of location scouting where I’m going in and out of spaces all the time, and everyone always laughs that I’m the fastest one. I’m like, “Why do you all have laces? This slows us down!”
The T-shirts I live in
I love the Hanes x Karla T-shirts. She revolutionized the white tee by making it the perfect cut. I think I have 10 of them in my suitcase at all times. And I love vintage shirts. That’s what I wear most of the time. Dress them up, dress them down. T-shirts are really the staple of my wardrobe. Rosser Riddle is another one that does great T-shirts. We just did a Good Trouble tee in honor of Senator John Lewis. And I wear a lot of Free & Easy sweatshirts. They’re my other go-to and a great company.
The line that saved my skin
I have used True Botanicals for years now. It’s the only thing I’ve used on my skin because it’s a sustainable company with materials that are all whole ingredients. They always blow my mind, and their products are really effective. I used to get really bad hormonal acne on my chin, and I thought I’d have to do some massive intervention, but then I started using True Botanicals. The clear line, specifically, is all for fighting acne, and I also use their cleanser and radiance oil. It smells so good. You feel like you’re in a woodsy spa.
The makeup products great for everyday wear
I love Burt’s Bees lip balm. And even though I haven’t worn a lot of makeup lately, there’s a really great company that’s also sustainable, Iris & Romeo, that has a really dewy SPF foundation called Best Skin Days. I really love it. They also have beautiful lip colors.
The comfiest robe and pajamas
I feel like we’ve all spent more time in robes this year than ever before, and I support it! I really have come to embrace and value every soft, cozy bit of a pajamas and robes that I can get my hands on. The Coyuchi waffle robe is a really good one.
