You love her as Lara Jean Covey, the letter-writing hero of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. And now you can get to know your fave Lana Condor on another level: singer-songwriter.
Condor recently released her debut solo single, “For Real,” a dreamy indie-pop love song that she wrote while quarantining with her friend, singer, songwriter, and producer Andrew Tufano, this July. It’s a sweet song about returning home to the one you love—inspired, it turns out, by a journal entry Condor had written about being apart from her boyfriend, actor and singer Anthony De La Torre.
“I travel so much for work, less in the past year because of COVID-19, but I always have a lot of mixed emotions when I leave home,” she tells me. “I knew I’d be traveling in the upcoming weeks for reshoots for the third To All the Boys movie, and I was having some anxiety about leaving. So I wrote my feelings down in my journal—which I highly recommend and is very cathartic—and then read the entry out to Andrew.”
Tufano has an amazing gift of empathy and feeling deeply, she says, so within a few hours he helped her turn that journal entry into a full-blown song. “I feel melancholy a lot when I’m on the road, and I wanted to express that in this song,” she says. “Ultimately, the feeling of coming home is always better than the feeling of travel for me.”
Songwriting is a newer creative pursuit for Condor, but it’s an exciting one. “With acting, I get to experience other people’s lives—see what they see, feel what they feel, and be in situations I might never actually be in, in my own life,” she says. “With music, it’s very much a personal experience. It’s intimate and real Lana. It’s sharing with the world who you really are and what you feel in a very personal way.”
To get to know Lana Condor even more, we asked her to participate in our latest installment of Your Fave’s Faves. Find out the last great book she read, the sweater she’s loving, and more.
My favorite dish to cook
My favorite dish to cook right now is spaghetti all’Amatriciana. I just love pasta in general, and this one is specifically delicious and very easy to make! It’s simple and slightly meaty, which I love because I am not a heavy meat eater, so just a taste is perfect for me.
The last great book I read
I recently read The Murder of Harriet Monckton, and I absolutely ate it up. It’s based in 1843, and I was just so intrigued with life and what being a woman was like back then. It’s a murder mystery based off of a true unsolved case and court documents, which was just so exciting to me. A real page-turner.
A feel-good song I love
“Your Body” by Anthony De La Torre. It is such an energizing song. Whenever I hear it, I want to dance. Also, for the obvious reason that he’s my boyfriend and I am his biggest fan.
My comfiest pants
Aerie has these incredible pants that I literally live in called the Offline Nylon Jogger. They have a really awesome thick waistline and super flowy fit. You can lounge and watch a movie in them or go out and run errands and look put-together. I love that. I also love Mother jeans. I think they’re so well made and really comfortable for jeans.
The last thing I bought
The last thing I bought was this amazing wallet from a brand called Parker Clay. Not only is the wallet very stylish and incredibly durable, but more important, the brand has an amazing mission. They are based out of Ethiopia and employ women who have been hired out of prostitution through the partnership of the Ellilta Women at Risk. They are giving these women a fresh new start and hope for a better future. I couldn’t be more honored to buy from them.
A movie snack you need to try
Popcorn with nutritional yeast. Don’t knock it till you try it! It is super cheesy and delicious and also fairly good for you.
How I self-care
I think my Moleskine journal is my favorite self-care product. Journaling is very healing and a great way to do self-care. It is a place to quiet the mind and unload a lot of feelings for me. I always feel so much better after I get everything out on paper.
My beauty secret
The Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel is seriously a fave beauty secret of mine! I tend to be more on the dry side, and this moisturizer is like a glass of water for my skin. I am super picky about moisturizers, but this one just sinks so delicately into my skin and also doesn’t make my makeup clump when I apply foundation.
My favorite thing in my closet right now
Right now it’s my Sablyn cashmere sweater. I love cashmere, and this baby blue sweater is so delicious on my skin. It’s light enough to take the chill away while also not overheating. I wear it every day!
The comfiest bra I own
Right now my favorite bra is the Aerie Sunnie Wireless Sans Armature bra. Because I am in quarantine, I really don’t want to wear a bra…so typically I don’t. But if I have to, this is the most comfortable T-shirt bra. It doesn’t have any clasps and doesn’t cut into your skin.
The best workout I do
I love yoga because it is low impact and really based in stretching and breathing. Oftentimes I am not feeling up for a workout, so a quick 30-minute yoga always just helps me feel good and refreshed and gets the blood moving.
