Cuoco, who played Penny on the long-running CBS sitcom from 2007 to its final season in 2019, secretly dated her costar Galecki, a.k.a Leonard, for two years—just before their characters got into bed together. “When we did the pilot, I was crushing so hard on Galecki but he had a girlfriend,” Cuoco shared during an interview with Dax Shepard on his podcast Armchair Expert, per People.
She continued, “We got together and just fell mad for each other for two years, but then we broke up. Luckily Johnny and I came out of it so brilliantly and we’re closer today than we ever were.” Cuoco currently stars in the upcoming HBO Max series, The Flight Attendant.
Considering the pair called it quits before their characters started getting hot and heavy in season 3, Cuoco thinks the timing was pretty sus—in fact, she says the sitcom creator Chuck Lorre may have been trying to “fuck” with them.
“When we broke up, obviously, it was a little sensitive for a minute, but I remember those weeks that Chuck had written these episodes where all of a sudden our characters were like sleeping together every other second,” she said.
“Johnny and I talk about it and I think [Chuck] did that on purpose just to fuck with us,” Cuoco continued. “If I was with him, I would ask him because that came out of nowhere. All of a sudden these characters were all up on each other.”
Obviously, there’s no bad blood. Kaley Cuoco got engaged to Karl Cook in 2017 and has been married for two years, while Johnny Galecki welcomed his son with girlfriend Alaina Meyer back in December 2019.
“I was meant for you,” Cuoco told Cook in her wedding vows. “You are a good man, Charlie Brown, and I am yours.”
