Inside Out 2 Came Just $426,431 Shy Of Beating Jurassic World For A Top 10 All-Time Box Office Record

As 2024 winds to a close, there is no question that Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing film of the year. Set a few years after the ending of the first film, the sequel found great success in continuing Riley’s story and that of the emotions in Inside Out. The first movie performed quite well upon its release in 2015, but its worldwide haul of $858 million, but that now pales in comparison to the success of Inside Out 2 at the box office.

There were a lot of knockout hits in 2024. Deadpool and Wolverine soared past $1 billion dollars worldwide, and Disney’s other sequel, Moana 2 is still riding high at the box office. Inside Out 2 has surpassed Disney’s The Lion King and Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animated film Disney has ever made. Indeed, Inside Out 2 has raked in just shy of $1.7 billion internationally. With a box office run like that, Inside Out 2 has been overwhelmingly successful, but there are some records even it couldn’t topple – despite coming impressively close.

Despite this record-breaking success, Inside Out 2 has just barely fallen short of a spot in the top ten highest-grossing domestic films of all time, where it is beat out by Jurassic World. Jurassic World came out in 2015, the same year as Inside Out, and ushered in a new era for the Jurassic Park franchise. After the middling success of Jurassic Park 3 in 2001, Jurassic World raked in $653,406,625 domestically and $1,671,537,444 worldwide. That launched Jurassic World into a top ten spot on both domestic and international box office charts, where it has stayed ever since.

Jurassic World 4 has been announced and is currently in development. However, there’s a chance the movie could break the franchise’s 3-movie streak.

By contrast, Inside Out 2 grossed $652,980,194 domestically, landing it at number 11 for domestic revenue. That is a difference of just $426,431. For context, Inside Out 2 made nearly $300 million in just its opening weekend. Furthermore, Jurassic World‘s domestic box office revenue includes not only its initial gross, but also its lifetime gross. Although the numbers are in for Inside Out 2‘s initial box office gross, it is entirely possible that, over time, Inside Out 2 will claw past Jurassic World into the domestic top ten.

None of this is to say that the battle for dominance is settled between Inside Out 2 and Jurassic World. The international revenue for Inside Out 2 made up more than 61% of its total gross box office sales. For Jurassic World, international box office sales made up a little more than 60% of total revenue. While that might not seem like a lot, it means that on the international stage, Inside Out 2 is beating Jurassic World by more than $27 million. So far, Inside Out 2 has made $1,698,586,747. That $1.7 makes Inside Out 2 the eighth highest-grossing film of all time, just behind Spider-Man: No Way Home.

All this success has meant that Inside Out 2 has broken records across the board. It dethroned Incredibles 2 as the highest grossing Pixar film of all time and the highest grossing animated movie domestically. When he rejoined Disney in 2022, CEO Bob Iger immediately promised Moana 2, Frozen 3, Incredibles 3, and Toy Story 5. If history repeats itself, we may see Inside Out 2 dethroned from all its current record breakers by one of these up-and-coming animated sequels; only time will tell.
