It happened during a dream sequence after Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) collapsed in the parking lot. And he was back again in the second episode as Mer battled coronavirus as a patient at Grey Sloan Memorial hospital.
But Grey’s being Grey’s, there are many more surprises and, likely, tears ahead—as a teaser for the next new episode revealed. In it, a voiceover says, “As Meredith’s life hangs in the balance, another person from her past returns.” We see various characters on the show looking stressed and upset as they learn they can’t wake Mer up. Then, she’s back on the beach where she saw Derek, looking up and saying, “Excuse me!”
We don’t see who she’s talking to, though there could be so many options, as Pompeo herself acknowledged on Twitter. “If you really think about it… there’s a lot of people it could be,” she wrote.
Okay, so let’s think about it. If we follow the “logic” of Meredith’s previous dream sequence where she sees Derek, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think whoever she sees is also someone who’s died. That rules out characters like Alex Karev, Cristina Yang, Addison Montgomery, or Izzie Stevens.
But so many people Mer loves have died on Grey’s Anatomy, so the list of possibilities is still long. Her mom, Ellis, has appeared many times in the past. Or her dad Thatcher, with whom she always had a complicated relationship. There’s also her sister, Lexie, who died in the plane crash in season eight. Or George, her beloved bestie, who was hit by a bus.
Fans have many more theories, however, ranging from Calzona (Callie and Arizona) to Cristina.
Sadly, we’ll have to wait two weeks to find out who it is. The show won’t air on Thanksgiving and the next new episode is December 3.
