Did Marvel Just Reveal How the Ultimate Universe Will End? The Clues Are There

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Ultimates #8! Marvel Comics has just launched an all-new Ultimate Universe, a continuity that’s very much still in its infancy. However, it’s possible that fans already know how this new Ultimate Universe will end. While currently just a theory, there’s some pretty strong evidence to suggest that the Ultimate Universe will come to a close in a dramatically epic (and downright depressing) way, and that evidence can be found in the latest issue of The Ultimates.

In The Ultimates #8 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, readers are introduced to the Guardians of the Galaxy of Earth-6160. In the Ultimate Universe, the Guardians consist of Star Lord, Captain Marvel, Cosmo, Ultimate Nullifier, and (formerly) America Chavez. Not only that, but this team of cosmic heroes has the ability to not just travel through space, but also through time. Their spaceship is also effectively a time machine, as the Guardians travel back in time from the 61st Century.

Given that the Guardians are a time-traveling team of heroes, they know what will become of the Ultimate Universe in the end – at least, as it relates to the current ‘big bad’ of this new continuity: the Maker. The Maker traveled to Earth-6160 with his own time machine, and he reshaped the universe to his liking. However, the team of heroes known as the Ultimates have risen up to defeat the Maker and fix their broken world. That means an ultimate battle between the heroes and villains is inevitable, and the Guardians have already spoiled who will win: the Maker.

The Maker is Going to Come Out on Top in the Ultimate Universe (Potentially)

If the Guardians of the Galaxy are Right, the Maker will Beat the Ultimates

The only reason the Guardians of the Galaxy went back in time was to rescue America Chavez, who became lost in the timestream during one of the Guardians’ missions (which also gave her amnesia). America decides to stay with the Ultimates, even after the Guardians reveal to her that the Ultimates’ mission is doomed to fail. The Guardians telepathically show America the not-too-distant future, where the Ultimates confront the Maker himself, and they are all crushed under his might.

According to the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Ultimate Universe will end with the Maker on top, and the Ultimates defeated forever. Not only that, but because of the Maker’s meddling in the timestream, the previously set timeline of Earth-6160 was changing. Ripples from the Maker’s actions spread across every point in time, erasing Earth-6160’s established universe while simultaneously replacing it with one of the Maker’s own designs. And, worst of all, there’s nothing the heroes can do about it.

The Ultimate Universe’s Time Travel Means Anything is Possible

The Maker Could Still Be Defeated by the Ultimates

While things may seem grim in the Ultimate Universe following the Guardians of the Galaxy’s little visit to the 21st Century, that’s not necessarily the case. Sure, one potential future ends with the Maker defeating the Ultimates and ruling the universe with impunity, but that is just one potential future. The entire Ultimate Universe is centered around time travel, meaning the future is always in flux. If the Maker wins in one potential future, there are countless others where he loses, and it’s up to the Ultimates to make that future come to pass.

Marvel’s Ultimate Universe Promises to Avoid a Surprising Hero, And I’m Seriously Not Okay

The Ultimate Universe is continuing to introduce ‘ultimate’ versions of iconic Marvel Comics characters, but it just promised to avoid one character.

There is a glimmer of hope for the Ultimates in their battle against the Maker to fix their damaged world, as the use of time travel throughout this story means nothing is set in stone. However, the Maker has seemingly mastered time travel, proven true by the fact that he conquered the Ultimate Universe to start with, meaning it’s more than likely the grim future revealed by the Guardians of the Galaxy will, indeed, come to pass. And, if that’s the case, then Marvel just revealed how the Ultimate Universe will end – and it couldn’t be more depressing.

Ultimate Marvel

Created in 2000, the Ultimate Marvel imprint redesigned the entire Marvel Comics universe with a new set of origin stories and relationships. The reboot reinterpreted Marvel continuity from scratch in an attempt to simplify and update the company’s 60-year history for modern audiences. With famous comic book writers such as Brian Michael Bendis, Warren Ellis, and Mark Millar at the helm, the Ultimate universe (named Earth-1610 within the Marvel multiverse) lasted 15 years and provided plenty of inspiration for the MCU.
