Cruel Intentions Season 2 Gets Detailed Update From Showrunners

The showrunners behind the Cruel Intentions reboot detail their plans for season 2. Debuting on Prime Video in November, and taking inspiration from the popular 1999 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the new version focuses on the step-siblings Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont who will do just about anything to maintain their status at Manchester University, including seducing the Vice President’s daughter. The cast of the Cruel Intentions reboot includes Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Brooke Lena Johnson, and Sean Patrick Thomas.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners and executive producers Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman address the possibility of the Prime Video drama coming back for season 2. While the showrunning duo makes it clear that they don’t yet know whether the series will be renewed, they do have an idea about where the story could go next and it’s related to the school year. : “It’s such a weird world of television where you don’t know how many seasons you’re going to get, and you don’t know how many episodes those seasons are. … We’ve divided the school year up into four or five sections, and we definitely need to get to graduation, but we’re very slow moving. We haven’t even gotten to Halloween.”

One Section Could Last A Season

The ending of Cruel Intentions season 1 leaves the story wide open for a renewal, as Lucien (Burgess) and Caroline (Hook) have a dramatic falling out that leads both of them to lash out in spectacular ways. The Vice President’s daughter, Annie Grover (Smith), is likewise poised for a shift as she’s done being used as a pawn. But whether the story gets to move forward likely has to do with different factors that have yet to be fully weighed.

Cruel Intentions season 2 getting confirmed will come down to viewership, which remains tricky to keep track of in the absence of transparent data.
