Creature Commandos Episode 6 Review: Punchy & Perfect, DCU’s Anti-Heroes Step It Up Ahead Of A Tense Finale

As with each of the preceding episodes, episode 6 puts the spotlight on one of the new DCU heroes as their backstory is explored alongside the contemporary events of the series. This week, the show focused on Doctor Phosphorus, and with the most heartbreaking and action-packed story yet, it delivers one of the best entries in the series with one episode left to go.
After episode 5, Rick Flag Sr. was left in critical condition after his fight with Clayface and the rest of the Creature Commandos were scattered around Pokolistan as they attempted to get to Princess Ilana and complete their new objective. Episode 6 picks up directly after these events and sets up the series finale with incredible pacing and efficiency. It also dives deeper into the history of how Doctor Phosphorus came to be the glowing demon skeleton that now strikes fear into the hearts of his enemies.
Creature Commandos Makes Storytelling A Top Priority
With the show’s wild premise, the animated adult adventure series could have easily turned into something that is purely violent, comical, and dark. However, James Gunn has made it clear that the storytelling is pivotal in the DCU’s first official entry, with every character getting their turn in the spotlight and having their story told.

However, there is still plenty of room to zero in on the other characters as they all get updates and individual story beats within the episode. Creature Commandos episode 6 actually does this better than any of the episodes in the season up to this point.
And while following the entire team, split across several different countries, the episode never felt rushed or overstuffed. This is a credit to Gunn for his succinct storytelling, but also the editors who managed to refine the episode to such a compact format while still delivering on all the emotions, narrative, and action. The result is a spectacular penultimate episode that firmly plants the Creature Commandos exactly where they need to be for the season finale.
Creature Commandos Delivers Dynamic Drama
Despite being a short-form animated series with episodes that range from 20 to 25 minutes, Creature Commandos does a fantastic job setting up drama and tension. Whether it is between the team, the targets, or random people they encounter along the way, the show makes the characters feel important and uses them to further define the heroes of the series. It would be simple to just include background characters as a way for the heroes to fight, or avoid, but the show does so much more.

The duality between the past and present narratives gives the entire series a frame of reference as it ties them together around a single figure with each new entry. Where some of the previous episodes have done this and slightly struggled to deliver balance, episode 6 had no such difficulty. And that was not down to Doctor Phosphorus having a more simple backstory, because it is absolutely not. It’s heartfelt, emotional, and intense, just like the present-day narrative that plays out.

With the way it combines all these things, Creature Commandos absolutely nails the penultimate episode. As long as the show can keep the momentum up and deliver an equally profound and powerful finale, Gunn and Co. have done an incredible job setting up the DCU and establishing these obscure B-List heroes as characters worth following on their onward journey, especially as the DCU expands and begins to introduce other characters that could aid, or come into conflict, with the Creature Commandos‘ heroes.
