Queen Camilla to Miss Royal Variety Performance Due to Chest Infection
Queen Camilla will miss the Royal Variety Performance on Friday, November 22 due to an ongoing chest infection, Buckingham Palace has announced.
Doctors have advised Camilla, 77, not to overextend herself, leading to her last-minute withdrawal from the event. She was previously scheduled to attend the performance with her husband, King Charles III.
“Following a recent chest infection, the Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms, as a result of which doctors have advised that, after a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritize sufficient rest,” the palace said in a statement. “With great regret, she has therefore withdrawn from attendance at tonight’s Royal Variety Performance. His Majesty will attend as planned.”
Camilla’s decision to stay home comes after she missed two events honoring British soldiers earlier this month, including the Remembrance Sunday ceremony.
“While this is a source of great disappointment to the Queen, she will mark the occasion privately at home and hopes to return to public duties early next week,” a spokesperson said in a statement at the time.
The Queen is reportedly “naturally disappointed to miss the evening’s entertainments, and sends her sincere apologies to all those involved, but is a great believer that ‘the show must go on,” a royal source told the Daily Mail.
“She hopes to be back to full strength and regular public duties very soon,” the source added.
She also missed the November 13 premiere of Gladiator II, which she was scheduled to attend with Charles, who went solo and met with director Ridley Scott.
This year’s Royal Variety Performance, which is seen annually by 152 million TV viewers worldwide, will feature performers ranging from Sir Elton John to comedy magician duo Penn and Teller.
Camilla still plans to travel to the royal residence at Sandringham next week, but is sitting out of the performance on Friday due to its length and late start time..
Despite another canceled public appearance, the monarchy is not revealing any reason for the public or royal fans to panic. Her illness is merely “a nasty bug that apparently is going around a bit,” the Daily Mail reported.
Camilla made her first public appearance on Wednesday since her diagnosis, receiving an honorary doctorate of literature by The University of London. Her sister-in-law, Princess Anne, presented her with the honor.
“As an avid reader, The Queen has a strong interest in highlighting the importance of literacy and has long been a supporter of literacy in the UK and across the Commonwealth,” the royal family’s website says. “Her Majesty has visited schools and libraries, as well as workplaces and prisons, to see the work of adult literacy schemes.”
