Cooper Hoffman, 17, will lead the cast of the Phantom Thread director’s upcoming 1970s period drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It is said that Cooper will play a child star trying to navigate both high school and Hollywood.
Anderson notably collaborated with Philip Seymour Hoffman on the films Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and The Master.
The director’s next film, tentatively titled Soggy Bottom, is said to be a coming-of-age tale set in San Fernando Valley.
Stars confirmed to star in the film are A Star is Born star Bradley Cooper, director-actor Benny Safdie, and HAIM band member Alana Haim.
The film will be the younger Hoffman and Haim’s film debuts, with the latter appearing in music videos for her band that were directed by Anderson.
Safdie is said to be playing a character inspired by L.A. City Council member Joel Wachs, who was a “closeted gay man until he was preparing to run for mayor in 1999 at the age of sixty,” according to the New York Times.
Bradley Cooper’s appearance in white clothes and hair on-set for the film has been likened to celebrity hairdresser and producer Jon Peters.
Meanwhile, Haim’s outfit has been likened to clothes worn by iconic singer Barbra Streisand in a similar period, and who was also Peters’ partner from 1973 to 1982.
It is unconfirmed who is are portraying in the film, but Anderson himself has also penned the script.
Cooper Hoffman is the son of Philip Seymour Hoffman and costume designer Mimi O’Donnell.
The pair also had two daughters: 13-year-old daughter Tallulah and 11-year-old daughter Willa.
Philip Seymour Hoffman died at the age of 46 in 2014 from ‘acute mixed drug intoxication’ having ingested heroin, benzodiazepines, cocaine, and amphetamines prior to his death.
He had previously struggled with drug addiction in his youth but had been sober until his relapse in 2013.
The actor moved out of the family home prior to his death to shield his children from his substance abuse, according to Mimi in a conversation with Vogue in 2018.
