Jamie Oliver Christmas special filming wrecked by ‘golf ball’ size hailstones

Jamie Oliver had to abandon filming of his Christmas special in July – when a freak hail storm hit.

The TV chef and his crew were forced to run for cover as the weather suddenly turned, despite temperatures topping 32C on the hottest day of the year.

A baffled Jamie shared clips of the wind, rain and huge hailstones from their filming location with his 8.6 million Instagram followers.

Speaking to the camera, the 46-year-old braced himself from the weather conditions as he said: “So guys. We’re filming the Christmas special.

“It’s currently been the hottest day of the year – then this comes in.

“Like the biggest hail, the biggest wind – the craziest weather. Thunder, lightning, wind, rain, the massive hail. It’s going mad.”

The chef then turned the camera to face outside so fans could see huge hailstones falling and trees blowing wildly in the wind.

The hail was so bad Jamie’s food researcher Hugo Harrison appeared to have been injured.

Sharing a picture of Hugo’s legs with red marks all over them, Jamie captioned it: “Wow even our dear Hugh Harrison got done over by some massive hail stones? Like bloody golf balls.”

A huge gathering of hailstones could be seen in a canopy above the crew’s filming equipment.

In another shot, which showed equipment collapsed on the floor along with some of the crew’s kit, Jamie wrote: “Gallery gone. Kit dead?”

Security camera footage showed desperate crew members struggling to hold down filming tents.

Sharing a photo of hailstone looking like snow on the floor, Jamie said: “Like snow but more like massive hailstones?!

“I’ve never seen this in 46 years in Essex. @gretathunberg it’s started.”

Miraculously the next shot of Jamie is with sun and blue skies in the background – despite being in exactly the same location.

He told his followers: “And then the sun is back out again – that was 20 minutes ago. Random, random, random.”

Jamie reveals the weather was so bad they can’t continue filming. He asks: “So, Nile the director, what’s going on?”

The director replies: “Erm, we’ve had to finish. We can’t go on. All the kit is being tested to find out what is broken and what needs to be replaced so that we can get all new kit for tomorrow morning and start again.”

Jamie then jokes: “The most important thing in summer is thinking about Christmas.”

“Has it gone? Will we have it done? No matter what happens Christmas will go on,” he reassures fans.
