Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer says convicted rapist going blind and losing teeth

Harvey Weinstein ‘s lawyers claims he’s going blind and losing his teeth in prison.

The shamed movie producer was convicted of rape and sentenced to 23 years behind bars but is appealing the decision.

Today, his lawyer claimed that he is losing his sight and has already lost several of his teeth during his time in jail.

The claim was made as Weinstein, 69, appeared virtually in Erie County Court in New York to fight extradition to Los Angeles on a fresh indictment for sex crimes.

Dressed in a burgundy sweater, it’s said he appeared to be in good spirits as he smiled and chatted with his lawyers before the proceedings began.

His attorney Norman Effman then told the court that the reason his client doesn’t want to be shipped off to LA is because he has dental and eye procedures that need to be done first.

He said that Weinstein is almost blind and needs an operation on his eyes.

He added that he is “scheduled for some dental procedures to save his teeth — he’s lost, I believe four at this point”.

Judge Kenneth Case granted Weinstein’s defence team one week to file a motion to challenge the extradition, which he plans to rule on on April 30.

Weinstein, who has repeatedly protested his innocence and is appealing his rape conviction, faces an 11-count felony complaint in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The charges include rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual battery by restraint, coming from the allegations of five different women.

If convicted of the alleged crimes, claimed to have taken place between 2004 and 2013, he could face a prison sentence of up to 140 years.

Weinstein is currently behind bars at Wende Correctional Facility following his conviction last year.

A jury found him guilty of rape and forcibly performing oral sex, with each charge relating to a different woman.

He’s since appealed the conviction, claiming that he was “deprived of a fair trial”.

His extradition to LA has been pushed back twice due to the coronavirus pandemic, with paperwork originally filed by LA prosecutors in March last year.

Weinstein’s LA lawyer Mark Werksman has also insisted he’s innocent, saying: “These are stale, unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, uncredible allegations that arose during the hysteria of the #MeToo movement and we’re confident that Mr Weinstein will be acquitted because there’s no credible evidence against him. He’s innocent.”
