Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s fortune increases during coronavirus pandemic

As Harry Potter creator JK Rowling celebrates her 56th birthday, which she shared with The Boy Who Lived himself, we take a look at her eye-watering net worth

Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who is celebrating her 56th birthday today, has managed to continue increasing her fortune over the past year.

The woman behind the magical Wizarding World empire has become famously wealthy over the years as her books have flown off the shelves and been adapted into blockbusters films – as well as a stage play.

More than 500 million copies of the Harry Potter series have been sold worldwide, and it was also made into a successful film franchise.

The magical universe she created has even inspired the creation of three massive amusement parks.

JK Rowling’s net worth

JK Rowling has an estimated net worth of £820million, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2021.

According to the publication, her wealth has increased with £25million from the previous year.

Rowling, who is most famous for creating the Harry Potter universe, released children’s book The Ickabog in 2020.

The author released the book in instalments for free online last year, starting in May.

When the book was published in full in November, Rowling pledged all the royalties would go to charities hit badly by the Covid-19 pandemic.

She also gave £1million to help the homeless and victims of domestic abuse during the pandemic.

She announced she would split the money between homeless charity Crisis and Refuge.

Rowling has been able to do this because her Wizarding World franchise has continued to grow exponentially since the release of the final film.

However, despite her massive success, she has never declared herself a billionaire due to giving a lot of profits and large donations to charity.

She even set up her own children’s charity called Lumos.

In 2012 she reportedly dropped off Forbes’ billionaire list due to her estimated ‘$150million in charitable giving”.

The publication stated: “New information about Rowling’s estimated $160 million in charitable giving combined with Britain’s high tax rates bumped the Harry Potter scribe from our list this year.”

Still, according to Forbes she is the second highest-paid author in the behind, behind prolific writer James Patterson.

According to Business Insider, Rowling’s book sales totalled more than $7.7billion (£5.3billion) in 2019 – although she won’t receive that whole amount.

Regardless, according to Forbes she makes most of her money through the Universal Studios’ Wizarding World.

In addition, her website Pottermore is said to be a huge earner, with a reported £13.6million in revenue in 2016.

In addition, the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play earned £1.6million in ticket sales in a single week.
