Strictly: Dan Walker and Nadiya perform a Rumba

Dan Walker has hit back at fix allegations on Strictly Come Dancing after sailing through to the quarter finals of the dance show.

Complaints began to mount on Sunday night after the BBC presenter’s name was called first in the results show, as he avoided the dance off for another week despite his low scoring Rumba.

While Dan and his partner Nadiya Bychkova were delighted to dance another week, some viewers took to Twitter to vent their fury.

After observing a series of angry tweets directed at him, Dan defiantly quipped back: “Thank you to everyone who is sending lovely messages & enjoying us having fun on #Strictly.

“And to the few who say… ‘Just leave’, ‘Aren’t you ashamed?’, ‘You’re a disgrace’, ‘It’s a fix’ (which I don’t get) or ‘Who is voting for them?’”

“IT’S A TV SHOW! See you in the 1/4 finals.”

Many of Dan’s supporters responded to his post with praise for his positive attitude.

“He is so popular because he’s progressed so well, it’s a good partnership, choreography has been good, he’s a great performer, he is likeable/watchable and not coasting.

“All those things make him popular so stop trying to bring him down. It’s not cut and dry [that the] most technical dancer should win,” commented one.

““Don’t let the glass-half-empty crowd get to you Dan,” another told him.

However, others continued to share their upset that Dan remained in the competition after Tilly Ramsay was sent home.

“Not feeling a little bit ashamed when better dancers go out instead of you?” one asked.

“It’s a TV show and a dance competition. Criticism of your wooden dancing is also allowed!” they told the presenter.

“You may be popular, but it’s supposed to be a dancing contest, not a popularity vote. Turns @bbcstrictly into a joke!” fired another.

This week Dan and his partner Nadiya performed a Rumba to Desperado by Eagles, earning a total of 31 points.

While low-scoring Dan and Nadiya sailed through on viewer votes, Tilly Ramsay missed out on a place in the Strictly Come Dancing quarter-final as she became the ninth celebrity to leave the series.

The social media star went up against CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson when she again performed her samba to Levitating by Dua Lipa with professional partner Nikita Kuzmin.

While Rhys and partner Nancy Xu performed their waltz to You Light Up My Life by Whitney Houston again before Ramsaywas given the boot by the judging panel.

Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke and guest judge Cynthia Erivo, who was filling in for Motsi Mabuse, all opted to save Stephenson and Xu who were third on the leaderboard on Saturday, while head judge Shirley Ballas also said she would have opted to save the pair.

After hearing the news, Ramsay said: “I’d just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has made this an amazing, positive journey for me.

“From everyone here to backstage, wardrobe, make-up and camera crew… It’s just been the most extraordinary time.

“I found out something about myself that I didn’t know I could do, I didn’t know I could dance and have fun like this.

“So, a massive thank you and, obviously, a huge thank you to Nikita who has guided me out of my shell and has just made this the most amazing experience.”

Addressing Kuzmin, she added: “Thank you, thank you, thank you. It’s just been amazing. I really meant it when I said I made a best friend for life.

“You’ve just been incredible. Thank you for the best couple of weeks.”

Kuzmin told her: “I’m the most emotional person so I hope I don’t cry. I’m just grateful for everything, for the whole Strictly team, for the production team, for the costume, for the make-up, for everything.

“Thank you guys, thank you to the professionals and cast, and a huge, huge thank you to Tilly.”

The Strictly Come Dancing quarter-finals are on Saturday December 4 at 6.40pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
