Coldplay debuts single in space on International Station 250 miles above Earth

Coldplay’s new single has been premiered on board the International Space Station.

The award-winning band called on the help of French astronaut Thomas Pesquet to provide the out of this world experience 250 miles above Earth.

The band, fronted by Chris Martin, provided the astronaut with a special performance of Higher Power featuring dancing alien holograms.

And he was happy to provide the first air time for their new single when he played it just after midnight on board the station.

The band – Chris Martin, 44, Guy Berryman, 43, Jon Buckland, 43, and Will Champion, 42 – w also joined the 43-year-old aerospace engineer for a conversation via video call.

The song’s premiere followed a conversation which took in similarities between life on tour and life on the ISS; the fragility of planet earth; and whether the astronaut has spotted any aliens.

In the recorded performance, the four-piece are seen playing in their trademark colourful outfits in front of shipping containers, while a troupe of hologram dancers perform in front of them.

Fans of the band were teased about its release last week.

The Max Martin-produced song was shown in a cryptic video and website referencing an Alien Radio.

It was then followed by a snippet of the track which appeared on TikTok for a 24-hour period.

Coldplay will perform Higher Power on American Idol on Sunday before following it up with a show at the Brit Awards on Tuesday.

The band will be opening the awards ceremony from a pontoon on the River Thames. It is set to be the UK’s first major indoor music event since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out.

Coldplay currently hold the title of being the most nominated group at the Brits, with 28 nominations in total and nine award wins.

The band will also play during Glastonbury’s Live At Worthy Farm global livestream on May 22.
