Benedict Cumberbatch ‘loved’ lockdown as he isolated with family at luxury lodge

Benedict Cumberbatch’s parents were only meant to visit him for three weeks but lockdown restrictions meant they resided with him in New Zealand for five months

Benedict Cumberbatch has confessed his lockdown was a positive experience as he got to spend time with loved ones at a swanky location.

The actor, 45, was busy filming his latest project for Netflix called The Power of the Dog in New Zealand when the lockdown restrictions came into force.

He played the role of volatile ranch owner Phil Burbank in the Western drama and had to perfect new skills during his time there.

He explained how he discovered “a new home” in a beautiful location along with his family – wife Sophie Hunter and their three kids Christopher, six, Hal, four and Finn, three.

Speaking with the American edition of OK!, the star said: “I loved [lockdown]. I was with my wife and children and my mum and dad had come over to have a three-week experience with us and see their boy riding a horse and steering some cattle.”

And he revealed that restrictions were imposed during their stay, allowing them to all spend valuable time together.

“They stayed for five months!,” he continued. “We were so lucky. Far away from home, but we found a new one.”

At the time, it was revealed that the family were shacked up in a luxury lodge costing £1,700 each night.

A source told The Sun at the time: “When lockdown first started to be enforced he considered going back to the UK but he opted to stay in the country at the secluded property.”

The property boasted an impressive 10 acres of land as well as a pool and pool house, spa. There were eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms, while there was also a tennis court available to use.

The new movie based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage revolves around Benedict’s character – a charismatic rancher who is both fears were revered by those around him.

After his brother brings home his new wife and her son, the rancher constantly torments them before her himself is exposed to the possibility of love.

Last month Benedict paid tribute to his “gifted” old sister who died after a seven year battle with cancer.

The BAFTA winner is understood to have grown up with older sister Tracey Peacock, 62, in London – with both siblings venturing into artistic professions in their adult life.

Benedict is said to have confirmed Tracy’s death recently and paid tribute to her, as reported by the Daily Mail.

He said the experience was “horrible,” adding: “She was nothing to do with this world. She was markedly different.”
