Alan Carr makes weight loss pact with Judge Rinder after 3 stone weight gain

Alan Carr is one of the nicest presenters on TV and isn’t afraid of poking fun at himself, so when it comes to piling on the pounds during lockdown, he is the first to admit he could not stop eating.

The 44-year-old roars with laughter as he reveals he gave in to the temptations of food during the first two restrictions.

And now in the third one, the comedian knows he needs to be careful.

Alan, who is to front a new BBC interior design show next week also told how he might finally accept a Strictly invitation, and be sexy, and that everyone is so camp on Ru Paul’s Drag Race they make him look butch.

Speaking of his size, he says: “I did put on a lot of lockdown weight. You are going to see there is a gap where people will think, ‘What the hell has he eaten because he has ballooned?’

The comedian says he’s been eating “any old s***”

“I have been eating any old s**t. I think I have put on about three stone. You see skinny people on Instagram and they only have a slice of banana bread but I was eating the whole lot.

“For my birthday, I went to put on my jeans and I said to my husband, ‘Paul, you have put your jeans on my shelf.’ But he hadn’t. I looked at them and realised they were a 36-inch waist. I couldn’t get them around my stomach.”

So has he lost the weight now? Stories have suggested he has been following his close friend Adele’s 1,000 calories a day diet.

Alan, who will be a guest judge on The Masked Singer next weekend, replies: “Absolute rubbish.” The star even had a bet with pal Judge Rob Rinder to see who could shed the most pounds.

He adds: “I rang Rob up last year and said, ‘I am fat.’ He said, ‘I am fat’. So we sent each other pictures and both agreed we were fat. We decided whoever had lost the least amount of weight by November 2nd would pay for dinner. I saw a picture of him and he is back to being skinny and so if there was anything good to come out of the lockdown, it was I couldn’t see him.”

Alan is self-deprecating as he chats jovially about his debut as presenter of the BBC’s Interior Design Masters competition, in which 10 up and coming designers compete in a series of challenges.

He says: “It’s a complete change doing this series and that is why I wanted to do it. I am a big fan of this kind of show even though I am crap when it comes to anything to do with design. I can’t put any wallpaper up and I am turning into one of those old gays where I spend time going around National Trust properties having cream teas.”

Each week, a contestant will be sent home to whittle down a winner who will land a contract with a commercial client.

Given home DIY is not his forte, has the show inspired Alan? He says: “It’s made me realise that if you are doing up your house, you don’t have to spend a fortune. I’ve picked up so many hints.”

Reflecting on the decor in his own home when he moved in with Paul Drayton, Alan adds: “We bought our house from a single woman and she loved a fairy. She had put fairies on the wall, angels on the doorknobs and lots of flowers… I was so embarrassed and I had to tell people I hadn’t done it. People were looking at it thinking, ‘Have a day off Alan, not everything has to be gay.’”

Alan also returned to TV late last year to film a new series of Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

He says: “It’s one of the things I did when I came back from second lockdown. A little bit of sparkle delivers and it pepped me up. And it’s nice for me to be in a room where I am the butch one. Everyone is so camp and OTT, it is nice for me to be like Jason Statham.”

One of the hardest working stars in showbiz, Alan didn’t stop much after the pandemic hit. From shooting a new series of DNA Journey with Amanda Holden for ITV, another round of Epic Gameshows to his role on Ru Paul’s Drag Race, he says he got tested so many times for Coronavirus, he can safely say he definitely didn’t have it.

Alan adds: “I have been lucky because I have been working and sometimes you forgot it was a pandemic.

Mind you, I was followed by a woman on the Interior Design Masters show with a two-metre stick everywhere. You would be talking to someone during filming and they would shout, ‘Two metres.’”

“I was tested to an inch of my life and so I know I haven’t had coronavirus. But my parents did. Thankfully they were fine but OMG when you got that call…”

Alan felt too nervous for his mum and dad to visit him at Christmas. He says it was a quiet affair with Paul.

After a few weeks off over the festive period, Alan is now raring to go. As well as a secret new TV project, he has a stand-up tour planned, which has already been postponed twice. He says: “It’s called Not Again Alan because I am sure some people will say, ‘Not again.’

“It’s a very personal show about being a married man and what I’ve been up to.”

The star says he’s more interested in doing a podcast than a chat show

He is also very interested in exploring the idea of more podcasts rather than doing a new show like Chatty Man.

“We live in a world of Instagram and podcasts and I wonder if a chat show is obsolete.” But Alan has no plans to ditch TV, 14 years after he burst onto it presenting Friday Night Project.

He adds: “I am not a veteran yet. I love telly and I am having the time of my life. It’s a joy. As someone who has worked in call centres, packed shampoos, put raisins in fruit and fibre, this is a dream.”

Every year, Alan is offered the chance to appear on Strictly. So will 2021 be the year when he accepts?

He loved Bill Bailey on Strictly – could it be him next year?

Dropping a hint it may, Alan replies: “There’s your headline. I loved Bill Bailey. If I did it, I’d want to be sexy. I want women watching me as I do the Tango and be full of lust. I don’t want to be the jokey one but I have a feeling I will end up being the Ann Widdecombe of the series. But maybe I will surprise you all.”

Asked if he will have the Covid jab when over-40s are eligible, he says: “Well the amount of weight I have put on, I am in one of those groups that have it earlier.”

  • Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr starts on BBC Two on Tuesday February 2 at 8pm
