It’s something that Brian Baumgartner—yes, Kevin from The Office—has been asked about 15,000-some times. And, most likely, will be asked about 15,000-some times again. The backstory behind what was arguably his character’s most defining moment: Spilling a vat of chili onto The Office’s office floor.
In the newest episode of “Explain This”—our video series where we ask celebrities to memory-lane through their best and worst career moments—we popped the question to Baumgartner right off the bat. Don’t worry, there’s about five other minutes of non-chili-related convo—including details on his brunch with The Office cast, and his podcast, An Oral History of The Office. But we figured we’d get it out of the way first.
“It’s clearly the thing that most people talk to me about,” Baumgartner said. “The thing I’m most proud of is we got it in one take. They call me the one-take wonder. Yeah, it was a gigantic mess.”
If you’re even a little bit Online, you’ve probably seen a Kevin meme out there in the social-mediasphere. The most popular of the bunch? Kevin Post Malone. Who is essentially: The Office’s Kevin Malone tatted up with Post Malone’s face tattoos. That said, we showed Baumgartner a selfie he took with Post Malone himself. Baumgartner initially thought it was a Photoshop job.
“So here’s what an idiot I am: Post Malone clearly asked me for a picture,” he said. “And I didn’t realize it was him. Until like a year later. It had nothing to do with what had gone on that evening or the amount of alcohol I had consumed, I’m sure. But it happened.”
Not enough talk about The Office for you? Watch the whole video to see if Baumgartner has heard anything from NBC about a possible reunion special.
