The Regina Police Service (RPS) says a “suspicious package call” ended on Monday and there is no threat to public safety.

According to a press release, the package/object was reported on the ground behind a business in the 900 block of Victoria Avenue around 10 a.m. on Monday.

After an assessment, the RPS said its explosives disposal unit (EDU) was called in and officers evacuated people from businesses in the immediate area.

Police said the package/object was destroyed at roughly 1:30 p.m.

“The best way to describe the container is to say it was an opaque container, so it was not possible to see its contents until we destroyed it,” read an RPS statement.

“The contents are best described as regular household items. In and of themselves, they pose no hazard, but the circumstances led us to approach this object with extreme caution until we knew more.

“We do not believe the object that was behind the business was left there out of some malicious intent. Therefore, there is no criminal consequence for whoever left it there.”

Police said the area was opened up to vehicle and pedestrian traffic once again.

No injuries were reported.
